About

Center Mission

CIPM fosters the development and implementation of pest management programs and policies based on a high level of knowledge of pest biology coupled with choices of monitoring tools and control technology, resulting in economically sound, environmentally compatible, and sociologically responsible pest management in diverse systems including crop production, urban and natural settings.

Core Values

As an organization, the Center for IPM believes …

  1. in Integrated Pest Management, the most effective and sustainable approach to managing risk associated with pest problems because its foundation is timely, objective, scientifically derived knowledge and because it optimizes environmental, economic and human health impacts.
  2. that effective information management is a critical component of IPM and that a key role for CIPM is to develop, refine and provide state of the art tools and strategies to enhance it.
  3. in delivery of successful IPM solutions at all scales from local pest control efforts to global issues of trade and pest invasions.
  4. that our success derives from the abilities and collaborative efforts of each and every employee, and that a nurturing work environment should exist in which these core values are routinely practiced and reinforced.
  5. in partnership with stakeholders in an environment of trust, flexibility and accountability.

What is IPM?

Integrated pest management (IPM) is socially acceptable, environmentally responsible and economically practical pest management in crop production, urban, and natural settings.

Traditionally a pest is defined as any organism that interferes with production of the crop. We generally think of pests as insects, diseases and weeds, but there are many other types including nematodes, arthropods other than insects, and vertebrates. We now also deal with pests in many non-crop situations, such as human health and comfort.
